How awesome would it be to produce a film based on your life story? Multi-faceted entertainer Ice Cube has the opportunity to do just that.
F. Gary Gray is in talks to direct Straight Outta Compton, the N.W.A. biopic set up at New Line Cinema.
Gray beat out contenders John Singleton, George Tillmanand Elgin James for the gig.
Andrea Berloff wrote the script for the project, which details the rise and fall of the Compton, Calif.-based group, whose initials read N—–s With Attitude. The members included drug dealer turned label founder Eazy-E, young disc jockey Dr. Dreand the politically active Ice Cube, plus MC Ren and DJ Yella. Another member, Arabian Prince, left N.W.A. before the group released the ground-breaking “Straight Outta Compton” album in 1988.
The group fell victim to the familiar trappings of success, with egos and jealousies surfacing, and the group frittered away. Eazy-E’s death, from AIDS-related causes, set the ex-members on a reconciliatory path.
Cube and Matt Alvarez are producing via Cube Vision. Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods, who inherited his share of the song rights, also is producing.
F. Gary Gray also directed classic 90’s films such as Set It Off & Friday (also produced by Ice Cube), so I truly look forward to this film. I also can’t wait to see who’s set to star in the leading roles!
Will you be catching Straight Outta Compton in theaters?
