For Discussion: Jay-Z Compares Same-Sex Marriage Opposition To Discrimination Against Blacks

As a proponent of gay marriage, I’ve truly never understood the popular semblance between racial discrimination & same-sex opposition. To me, civil rights & gay rights simply do not equate to a valid comparison. Sorry, but people were never enslaved, denied the right to vote or forced to attend segregated schools based on their sexual orientation. What’s more, racial discrimination is due to one’s inevitable physical appearance, not their behavior or lifestyle. I digress, but having said that, I’m surprised by Jay-Z’s recent comments on the matter.

The outspoken rapper recently voiced his support for gay marriage, stating:

“I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back. What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.” (Source)

I was with him until the last two sentences.

What are your thoughts on Jay-Z’s comments?

I agree with him it is discrimination. When you flat out deny a group basic principle rights it is discrimination. The whites made the same arguments in regards to interracial marriage and used the bible to validate their ridiculous points. The gay community struggle is almost similar minus slavery but they are pretty much being segregated when it comes to certain rights.
