For Discussion: NY Times Crowns Nicki Minaj ‘The Most Influential Female Rapper of All Time’
In what I would deem a well-written article — with a debatable perspective — The New York Times has crowned Nicki Minaj with the title of “the most influential female rapper of all time”.
Author Jon Caramanica writes:
BARELY a year and a half has passed since the release of “Pink Friday,” the platinum debut album by Nicki Minaj, but her style is well honed. She’s a sparkling rapper with a gift for comic accents and unexpected turns of phrase. She’s a walking exaggeration, outsize in sound, personality and look. And she’s a rapid evolver, discarding old modes as easily as adopting new ones. This hard and complex work has paid off: when she releases her second album, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” this week, it will be as the most influential female rapper of all time.
Caramanica even goes on to credit Nicki Minaj’s success for opening doors for other female rappers such as Azealia Banks, Brianna Perry & Iggy Azalea.
He even calls Nicki “the most eclectic black-music style idol since Grace Jones” — regarding her personal fashion as “… style elite, with a look that’s loud, cartoonish and edging toward avant-garde.”
The article goes on to praise her achievements, an area where I agree that she definitely deserves acknowledgement, as Nicki Minaj has undoubtedly become one of the biggest stars on the planet in a very short amount of time. But why neglect the fact that Lil Kim was just as big, if not bigger than Nicki Minaj in her prime? Let’s not forget Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, (both ladies also had the ability to sing & rap at the drop of a hat, a la Minaj), Foxy Brown, & other female rappers who most certainly opened the door for & influenced Nicki Minaj.
Do you agree that Nicki Minaj is the most influential female rapper of all time?
